President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. witnessed the launching of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) in Valenzuela City on January 9, expressing optimism for the future of the country’s public transportation system.
In his remarks, the President emphasized the importance of large-scale infrastructure projects for economic development and job creation, and pledged to sustain the implementation of such projects. He also praised the efforts of the Department of Transportation and its private partners in bringing the first subway system project in the Philippines to fruition, and recognized the contribution of the government of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The President acknowledged the joint venture between Filipino and Japanese companies working on the MMSP’s Contract Package 101, and expressed hope that both parties will stay committed to finishing the contract by the end of 2027. He also called on the public to continue showing patience, trust, and support for the government as these types of projects can take years to complete.
The Metro Manila subway, which will have 17 stations connecting Valenzuela City to Pasay City, is expected to serve over 519,000 passengers daily once operational. The President highlighted Japan’s expertise in technology and trailblazing contributions to the modern world, expressing confidence that their support will help the Philippines shape its railway infrastructure to meet the highest international standards.
In addition to the MMSP, President Marcos also mentioned other infrastructure projects underway or in the pipeline, such as the Manila-Clark Railway, the New Manila International Airport, and the Pasig River Expressway. These projects, along with the Metro Manila subway, are expected to greatly improve transportation in the country and provide greater access to places of work, commerce, and recreation for Filipinos.
