Sara Duterte denies ‘rebranding’ of Martial Law in textbooks

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte denied that there was an ongoing rebranding of martial law lessons in textbooks.

In a statement, Duterte said that she values the importance of martial law and EDSA revolution in the country’s history.

Duterte said the Education Department is busy in elevating the quality of education in the country and has no time to push for historical revisionism.

“Hindi po totoo ang rebranding,” Duterte said in her statement echoing the statement of her spokesperson.

“The terms New Society/Bagong Lipunan and Martial Law are both historical facts. It is a historical fact that New Society refers to the program launched by former President Ferdinand Marcos during his administration. And it is another historical fact that Martial Law refers to the 14 year-rule of the former President,” she said.

Duterte said that both terms are being used in Deped textbooks since 2000.

“DepEd is not in the business of erasing these facts and replacing them with something else,” Duterte added.
