A series of light earthquakes were recorded from Mount Pinatubo last week.
This prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to issue on Wednesday a reminder for the affected communities to be “always prepared”.

In an advisory on Wednesday morning, Phivolcs said the volcano still remains at Alert Level 0 and remains in “quiescent condition”.
Phivolcs said that the Pinatubo Volcano Network and the Philippine Seismic Network have detected a total of 826 imperceptible or slight earthquakes since Jan. 20, 2021 with magnitudes ranging from one to 2.5.
These earthquakes were generated from a long segment of the Sacobia Lineament, a fault that was last active during the post eruption period of 1991.

“Although there is currently no threat from the above recent earthquake activity, communities and local government units surrounding the volcano, nonetheless, have to be reminded to be always prepared for both earthquake and volcanic hazards and to build on the lessons of what they have experienced in the past years,” it said.
The eruption of the volcano on June 15, 1991 was considered as “the second largest volcanic eruption of the century and, by far, the largest to affect a densely populated area”, according to the US Geological Survey. (ES)
