Various citizens in Myanmar’s urban and rural slums have started eating rats and snakes they see on sewerages in order to survive hunger as the lockdown measures force people out of and into poverty, Reuters reported.
According to some of the residents of Hlaing Thar Yar, one of the poorest neighborhoods in capital Yangon, people go underground to look for reptiles and insects, as well as rats to eat in order to satisfy their starvation.
This, they said, following the lockdown measures that led to them losing their jobs and sources of income to survive the economic crisis posed by the pandemic.
Reuters reported that the country currently faces one of the region’s worst coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreaks and that the lockdown measures left hundreds out of jobs.
The government said public and private donations are being distributed to households, including food packages and cash grants, but admitted that not all families are being covered by these aid initiatives.
