Filipinos never cease to amaze the internet and social media as their talents continue to shine – this time, a Filipina who has the knack for creating miniatures out of popular Filipino favorites has surfaced
Scher Padilla, owner of Chibi Cravings, shared that she started her new hobby just a year ago in July 2018 as a toy collector. In an exclusive interview with The Filipino Times, Padilla shared that her frustration in being unable to find Pinoy-themed miniatures opened up an opportunity as she filled that gap.
“Nagstart po ako gumawa miniature food ko last July 2018 out of frustration kasi I don’t have the right props for my toys, I’m a toy collector kasi and I take photos of my toys, then gusto ko may food props sila..but since wala ako makita Pinoy-themed miniatures, naisipan ko gumawa for myself,” said Padilla
What started as a personal project then slowly transformed into a business as fellow toy collectors began commissioning Padilla to do miniatures for them: “My toy collector friends saw my creations, they asked me if I’m selling, that gave me the idea to produce more and open up an online shop here on FB para lahat meron Pinoy themed minis like mine.”
Making minis more meaningful
As an artist herself, Padilla draws inspiration on recreating simple, yet meaningful moments shared by many Filipinos as each miniature food item tells a story. “I think my love for my hobby (toy collecting) inspired me to create miniature food. I love collecting toys and taking photos of them.to create scenes. Being an artist as well gave me the desire to create and share these tiny pieces sa lahat ng collectors and miniature enthusiasts alike,” shares Padilla.
She furthers that she only learned majority of her skills through YouTube – and she’s still learning more skills on how to perfect her craft as days go by: “Naging toy collector po muna ako then I also collect miniatures then, but since puro Japanese/Western miniatures ang available and wala pa Pinoy food, naisip ko po gumawa na lang. I watched Youtube tutorials para matuto and eventually with enough practice, I’m able to create realistic miniature pieces like what u see today.”
