Dh 123,000 returned by UAE expat after transaction error

When your phone rings and it’s a message from the bank, it’s usually your salary that’s credited by the end of the month for most Filipino and expat workers here in the UAE – but for this Jordanian expat, it was a unique and curious experience.

Belal Al Houri, a Jordanian expat who has been living and working in the UAE for more than 14 years, got the surprise of his life when he received two messages from his bank of money being inserted into his account: One worth Dh 100,000 and the next, worth Dh 23,000, as per a report from Al Bayan.

Al Houri initially thought that the money came from one of his clients as he’s a tradesman by profession and thus he regularly receives transactions like this.

The expat immediately phoned his bank to ask about the transaction and found out that the confirmed transaction was a deposit made by an Emirati woman who deposited the money by mistake as she had planned to transfer the money to her husband. They discovered that the cause of error was that the account number of Al Houri and the woman’s husband was very similar.

Al Houri, with the help of the bank teller, the woman and her husband was able to transfer back the money into the correct account. The bank, the woman and her husband extended their words of gratitude to Al Houri for his honesty.
