Miss Universe drops BPCI as franchise holder in PH

The New York-based Miss Universe Organization has dropped Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) as the franchise holder of Miss Universe Philippines after 50 years.

The announcement came hours after the Miss Universe 2019 pageant in Atlanta, Georgia ended today.

Taking over the helm is a “fresh team” — Miss Universe Philippines Organization led by Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup.

“The Miss Universe Organization is thrilled to announce its partnership with the Miss Universe Philippines Organization – a fresh team that will lead the country towards its continued quest to share the beauty and grace of the Filipina to the rest of the world,” the organization said in its official Instagram and Facebook posts on Monday, December 9.

Aside from Supsup, other members of the new Miss Universe Philippines organization include Aces and Queens founder and Empire PH head Jonas Gaffud as Creative Director, and fashion designer Albert Andrada as Design Council Head.

Former Miss International Stella Marquez-Araneta of Colombia has been the national director of Miss Universe for the past 50 years.

During her helm, the Philippines has produced four Miss Universe queens –Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray.

Aside from Universe, Araneta’s Binibining Pilipinas Charities also holds the franchise to Miss International, Miss Supranational, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Grand International, and Miss Globe.

It is not immediately known why Miss Universe did not renew Binibining Pilipinas’ franchise.
