OFWs among victims of Facebook investment scam

Some overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including other netizens, recently fell prey to an investment scam on Facebook.

A Facebook page called Wealth Acceleration Freedom (WAF) promised its investors that the money they will invest will double or triple in amount in just a span of days, reported ABS-CBN’s Bandila.

However, netizens are now filing complaints after Cristel Joy Esperanzate, the founder of (WAF) and operator of the Facebook page, fled with their money.

According to the report, Jayson Nacario, one of the victims, said that he invested 100,000 to WAF.

Nacario further said that during the beginning, there were no problems with the payout. However, it was just last week when he found out he can no longer contact Esperanzate. He said that their Facebook page also got blocked on April 17, 2018.

According to other victims, they got convinced that the Facebook page was legit when Esperanzate posted a video showing a certification from the Department of Trade and Industry.

Aside from Nacario, many were also victimized by the scam, some of which were overseas Filipino workers.

The victims have filed complaints to the Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Authorities said that this form of scam is no longer new. It is similar with the traditional investment scam and the only difference is that the suspects used a more technological medium.

The PNP also warned netizens to not trust quickly especially if a hefty amount of money would be at risk. They said that investors should be sure of the investment company’s background and if it is registered and licensed.
