NBI to file human trafficking case against Mike Defensor

The National Bureau of Investigation is set to file a human trafficking complaint against former congressman Mike Defensor in connection with a Pasig City KTV bar that was raided by authorities earlier this year.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said Wednesday that the complaint would be filed before the Pasig City Prosecutor’s Office on June 26.

According to Matibag, the case is linked to an NBI operation conducted on April 21 at a KTV establishment in Pasig City, where authorities rescued 54 women who were allegedly victims of sex trafficking.

The NBI has been investigating the operation and the individuals allegedly involved in managing and facilitating the activities inside the establishment.

Matibag said the complaint against Defensor follows earlier cases filed by the bureau against his wife, Julie Defensor, and their son, Miguel Gabriel Defensor, over the same incident.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific allegations and evidence that will be included in the complaint against the former lawmaker.

The NBI said the filing of charges forms part of its efforts to hold accountable individuals allegedly involved in human trafficking and the exploitation of women.

Defensor has yet to issue a public statement on the planned filing of charges.

The Department of Justice will determine whether probable cause exists to proceed with the case after the complaint is formally submitted to prosecutors.
