The Shura Council, the Consultative Assembly of the Kingdom of Bahrain, may recommend a restriction on the consumption of energy drinks for those who are under 18 years of age. The move came after the Youth Affairs Committee presented a proposal about a ban.
The News of Bahrain reports that the proposed law states that people who are caught selling energy drinks to minors would be fined up to BHD 2,000 or AED 19,500.
Once approved, the law would require commercial markets and advertisers to make clear and obvious statements that energy drinks are not for sale to those under 18 years.
The proposal comes to light after a research has found that overconsumption of energy drinks can negatively affect the health of children and can bring out severe problems as energy drinks usually contain high levels of caffeine and sugar.
Aiming to reduce energy drink consumption in the country, the Youth Affairs Committee has clarified that the proposal is more of a restriction on the consumption of energy drinks to those who are above 18 years and not a total ban.
