Philippines’ COVID-19 cases breach 50,000 with record-high 2,539 new infections

The Philippines on Wednesday has breached the 50,000-mark in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases after recording 2,539 more infections.

The Department of Health said among the confirmed cases, some 1,922 are fresh cases or results of COVID-19 tests that have been released in the past three days. The remaining 617 are late cases or test results released over the last four days.

As for the breakdown, most of the new confirmed cases are from Metro Manila, 883. Some 369 cases are from Region VII while the 670 others were recorded from various areas nationwide.

With this new figure, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 50,359, with 12,588 recoveries and 1,314 fatalities. The total active cases stand at 36,457.

Next to Indonesia with 68,079 infections, the country has the second-highest number of cases in Southeast Asia.
