Chinese President Xi leads high-level party meeting on COVID-19

Wearing a disposable surgical face mask, Chinese President Xi Jinping challenged the highest officials of the Communist Party of China Central Committee to win the “major battle” of controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, and restoring economic and order of the country.
Xi, who is also the secretary-general of the powerful Central Committee, gathered all the seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee Wednesday.

In a speech, he ordered “all Party committees and government levels” to exert efforts to “win the people’s war” on COVID-19, state-controlled news agency Xinhua reported.
He noted that the epidemic prevention and control have entered a critical stage that “requires stringent efforts.”
Among his main instructions is for all hospitals in Wuhan and other cities to admit patients exhibiting fever or symptoms of COVID-19. Patients especially in a severe condition, he said, should be treated better with more medical resources and technology.
More hospital beds and medical workers should be deployed in Hubei Province, especially in Wuhan.
Xi also ordered to cut the “transmission routes” from communities with a high number of infection rates.
For largely populated regions, workers returning to work from the Chinese New Year holiday should also be strictly monitored.

The Chinese leader likewise emphasized the need to restore economic and social order, in the face of the epidemic.
“The meeting called on Party committees and governments at all levels to minimize the impact of the epidemic to maintain steady economic performance as well as social harmony and stability,” Xinhua said.
This is a “major battle” as well as a “big test,” Xi said, as he urged Party committees, governments and leading officials at all levels to “shoulder their responsibilities and pass the test.”
