United States President Donald Trump has invited President Rodrigo Duterte to come to the US for a special meeting together with the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
“This will provide an excellent opportunity for us to broaden and deepen our cooperation on matters of great importance to the nearly one billion people in the United States and ASEAN nations that we have the privilege to represent,” Trump said in a letter dated November 1. The copy of the letter was released on Sunday, January 19.
The meeting is scheduled to take place hopefully in the first quarter of 2020.
No information yet if Duterte has accepted Trump’s invitation. Trump has repeatedly invited Duterte to the US but the President has yet to make his decision.
The invitation was sent ahead of the bill, banning Philippine government officials involved in the detention of Senator Leila De Lima to enter the US territory.
