Anakbayan art group’s Panday Sining has issued an apology over the inconvenience caused by their graffiti art on the walls of newly cleaned Lagusnilad Underpass.
The group got the ire of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno who couldn’t help but express frustration after seeing the underpass neely refurbished walls ridden with screaming graffiti.
“Huwag kayong pahuhuli sa akin. Sige, human rights… ‘pag nahuli ko kayo, padidila ko sa inyo ‘to” Moreno said in an interview, referring to the writings on the wall.
Despite saying sorry, the group insisted that there are more urgent issues the public must look into.
“Left and right, ordinary people are being killed or jailed for criticizing this corrupt and fascist government. The space for peaceful and democratic speech is already being compromised by the regime as it pushes to criminalize dissent with its de facto Martial law nationwide in the name of Executive Order No. 70,” the group said.
“That is why Panday Sining, a cultural organization of the youth, conducted its Graffiesta as a response to this worsening economic and political state of the nation,” the group added.
“The purpose of our protest art isn’t to spite the citizens of Manila but to sound the alarm of the public against these injustices. The clear enemy is the fascist US-Duterte regime,” the group said.
Panday Sining said they are willing to sit down with Moreno to discuss the matter.
