Two workers dead at Sogo building collapse

Two workers died after being trapped in a collapsed portion of Sogo hotel in Malate, Manila this morning.

The two fatalities were identified as Melo Ison and Jeromie Fabello. They were among 22 workers in a demolition operation in the area. First to be retieved was Ison’s body after almost six hours of rescue efforts. Fabello’s body was recovered around 6pm. “We are very sorry to the family. Nakikiramay po kami, nakikiramay po ang Lungsod ng Maynila,” Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said.

The Manila Mayor has ordered an investigation on the local government, Sogo Hotel and the budget hotel’s contractor to determine who would be held liable for the building’s collapse. “Liability will come later, we’ll find out. I will task the City Engineer’s Office to find out if there is fault,” Moreno said. (Tristan Nodalo)
