Protesters injured after ‘anonymous’ drive-by attack using fireworks in HK

Tensions escalate in Hong Kong as six people were reported injured after fireworks were shot in a drive-by attack on Tuesday evening.

According to The Telegraph, those who were injured were holding a demonstration near a police station.

Police are still investigating who these attackers are. This is the second reported incident of protesters being targeted. Last week, it was a mob linked to triad gangs that perpetrated the attack so as to sow further confusion in this situation.

Prior to the attack, 44 people out of the 49 arrested during demonstrations on Sunday evening were charged with rioting.

In Hong Kong, rioting is an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Another 23 people accused of setting up roadblocks, breaking fences, damaging street signs, and attacking police officers were released on bail but they are up for sentencing on Sept. 25.

The others will have to wait for the court date.

Because of these recent charges against the protesters, it is likely that that this would further enrage others who earlier demanded of withdrawal of an extradition bill that would send suspects to face trial in mainland China.

The Communist Party has control of the courts there that would likely result to a 99.9 percent conviction rate.

Authorities have arrested a total of 170 people since the protests began.
