22 prisoners to be freed on Eid Al Adha

An Emirati businessman is sending almost two dozen prisoners out of the jail after he offered to pay their financial penalties.

UAE citizen Abdullah Ahmed Al Ansari will shoulder the payments while the Dubai Land Department has ensured them that they will get out and be home in time for the Eid Al Adha holidays as per a report from The National.

The businessman said these 22 prisoners who have been jailed for failing to settle rent disputes have not committed a crime. He emphasized that they were just “on the wrong side of the law in difficult circumstances”.

The amount for the release of these prisoners was not disclosed. Once payment is made, it will be the land department who will work with the Dubai Police to complete the release procedures.

Often, rental disputes between homeowners and tenants are taken to court, especially on the grounds of non-payment of bills, overdue fees and damage to property.

Sultan Butti bin Mejren, director-general of the Dubai Land Department, said they are open to other individuals who will extend the same assistance to their other prisoners.
