Ombudsman probes alleged Villar interference in LRT-1 Cavite extension

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said an investigation is underway into allegations that Senators Mark Villar and Camille Villar interfered with the implementation of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) extension project in Cavite.

Remulla said graft investigators are looking into claims that the senators may have contributed to delays in the construction of the Niog Station in Bacoor, which is targeted for completion in 2027.

According to Remulla, investigators are examining allegations that the Villars sought to change the railway alignment from Sucat to C-5 Road in Las Piñas, where properties owned by the family are reportedly located.

He said authorities are reviewing communications and records from agencies involved in the project as part of the investigation.

Remulla also claimed that opposition from lawmakers could affect the implementation of major infrastructure projects funded by public money.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Sen. Mark Villar denied the allegations and said he welcomes any legitimate investigation.

“I vehemently deny allegations that I delayed or blocked the implementation of the LRT-1 extension project. I have never used my position for personal gain. My track record speaks for itself. I welcome any legitimate investigation on the matter,” he said.

Sen. Camille Villar has yet to issue a statement regarding the allegations.
