LIST: 152 senatorial aspirants for 2019 elections

From fresh to familiar faces, a total of 152 senatorial wannabes filed their certificates of candidacy (CoC) for the midterm elections on May 2019, subject for evaluation of Commission on Elections (Comelec).

This year’s number is lesser than 2016’s 176 COC filers while nearly half of senatorial aspirants for next year’s polls run as independent candidates.

The youngest aspirant is 33-year-old Armelsen Palencia and former Senator Juan Ponce Enrile is the oldest at 94.

As per the Omnibus Election Code and issuances, Comelec has to evaluate their COCs to determine the nuisance candidates. Nuisance candidates are those who “put the election process in mockery or disrepute,” those who do not have a “bona fide intention to run,” and whether they can uphold a nationwide campaign.

The evaluation for the official candidates is until December 15, according to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez.
