An overseas Filipina worker (OFW) in Kuwait was arrested after stabbing her employer who reportedly abused her and threatened to kill her.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the OFW who was identified as Ulambai Singgayan stabbed her employer following a threat “to have her visa revoked and move her to another house where she would be killed”.
The Filipina was put under hospital arrest after her employer’s family members beat her up following the stabbing incident.
Medical records show the Filipina is suffering from internal abdominal bleeding and bruises in her face, chest, and arms.
DFA, meanwhile, assured Singgayan’s family that all assistance needed will be extended to the Filipina.
“Our Embassy in Kuwait continues to look after our kababayan Ulambai Singgayan and is coordinating with authorities to ensure that her rights are protected,” Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Sarah Lou Arriola said.
“Ulambai and her family here in the Philippines have our assurance that the DFA will provide her with legal and other assistance that she may require,” Arriola added.
The Filipina is currently facing felony charges.
The incident happened only months after the Kuwaiti and Philippine government signed a labor deal that seeks to protect the welfare of OFWs in the Gulf state. Among the provisions in the labor deal is that any form of abuse towards household service workers is strictly prohibited.
