PH Embassy in Abu Dhabi warns OFWs conducting illegal charity drives in UAE

The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi reminded overseas Filipino worker (OFW) groups and individuals of conducting illegal charity drives in the UAE.

In an advisory, the embassy said that individuals and organizations planning to hold a fundraising event or activities should coordinate with registered and authorized charities by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD).

These organizations are also required to secure a written approval from IACAD.

Citing the Decree No. 9 of 2015 issued by Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, conducting illegal charity drives in the Gulf state is punishable by two months to one year in prison and a fine of Dh100,000, depending on court ruling.

The full list of accredited charity groups is available at IACAD’s website on http://www.iacad.gov.ae.
