Meteor shower to light up Dubai night sky next week

After the historic blood moon that appeared last month in the UAE, the night sky in Dubai will literally light up next week as a meteor shower is expected to take place on Sunday, August 12, and Monday, August 13.

The 2018 Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to peak on the night of August 12 all the way to the morning of August 13 with 60 to 70 meteors showing up per hour. In some cases, however, meteor showers produce 150 to 200 meteors per hour.

This year, astronomers predict that the night of August 12 will be “moonless” meaning the meteor shower will be more visible to stargazers.

While the meteor shower is visible even without professional equipment, the Dubai Astronomy Group organized an event where stargazers can experience the Perseid Meteor Shower to the next level.

Upon payment of the registration fee, stargazers will be given the opportunity to attend a presentation on meteor showers and a telescopic view of the meteor shower as it happens. They will also be allowed to look at other celestial objects such as the Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, stars, globular clusters, and nebula.

The event will happen on August 12, from 10pm to 4am, at Al Quadra in Dubai.

For other information about the event, interested residents may visit Dubai Astronomy Group’s page.
