DepEd approves tuition hike in 947 private schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) has approved the request of 947 elementary and secondary private schools across the country for tuition fee hike this school year.

In DepEd’s report, 172 of the private schools whose request for tuition fee hike were approved are located in Central Luzon, 170 are in Metro Manila, and 169 are in Central Visayas. The rest are located in different parts of the country, reported PhilStar.

Earlier, the education department expressed that tuition hikes will help increase the salary of teachers in private schools as per Republic Act 6728 or the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education law.

Under the law, private schools that implemented tuition hike are required to allot 70 per cent of the increase for the benefit of their teaching or non-teaching staff. The benefit may come in the form of salary increase or allowances.

The remaining 20 per cent should be allotted for the improvement of facilities while the remaining 10 per cent serves as the return of investment.

While 947 private schools will implement tuition hike, 114 private schools in the country – 28 of which are in Metro Manila – will decrease its tuition fee.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has yet to release the list of tertiary institutions that will be implementing hikes in tuition and other fees.

A total of 248 tertiary institutions have been reportedly approved to increase their tuition and other fees.
