Fire in Binondo reaches National Archives of the Philippines

The fire that began early Monday morning, May 28, in Binondo has spread to the office of the National Archives of the Philippines.

The fire started at the Land Management Bureau, but after a few hours, it spread to the Juan Luna Building where the National Archives of the Philippines is located.

The National Archives of the Philippines keeps more than 60 million official documents dating back to the Spanish era that can be used by Filipinos as primary literature sources.

Historians, however, said the office in Binondo is only used for administrative services as actual documents are stored in Kalaw and Paco.

Aside from the two buildings, both the BPI Building and Moraga Mansion, a residential building, were also affected by the fire.

Authorities from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) are still investigating the cause of the fire that has reached Task Force Charlie as of 11 in the morning. To ensure that water supply would be enough, BFP utilized the nearby Pasig River for their water cannons.

The incident caused slow traffic movement along Jones Bridge due to the number of fire trucks deployed to the location.

Three firemen were also given medical treatment for sustaining injuries during the operations.
