A group of Filipinos showed the spirit of “bayanihan” when a wooden passenger boat carrying 23 people sunk into the waters of Polillo Strait in Quezon yesterday Oct. 10.
All the passengers of MB Recto were rescued with the help of a motorized banca nearby.
The boat had already sunk when the banca’s passengers were able to extend their help and pull the victims to safety using a rope.
A woman on the banca shot a video of the incident, wherein frantic shouts can be heard as MB Recto swiftly descended into the water.
“Iyong mga maliliit, kawawa naman,” the woman cried, implying there were children on the boat.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the boat encountered an engine failure while it was making its journey to Panukulan, Polillo Island.
