‘Parang basura’: Dubai OFW complains of mishandled balikbayan box

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who arrived from Dubai, UAE has accused a freight forwarding company of mishandling the balikbayan boxes he sent to his loved ones in the Philippines, GMA News reported.

Ferdinand Acupan said there are some items that could still be used but most of it are severely damaged and “looked like garbage” when Makati Express Cargo delivered the balikbayan box to his relatives in the Philippines.

“Parang nagkalkal na lang ako ng basura doon sa box. Galing abroad, pinadala mo rito as basura na lang,” Acupan was quoted in the report.

The Dubai-based OFW said his relatives received a damaged balikbayan box filled with crushed and unusable items like lotions, liquid detergents, etc.

Acupan’s girlfriend, who is also based in Dubai, said that she had the same experience with the cargo.

Asked for a statement, Makati Express Cargo said that they have been reminding OFWs not to include liquid items in their balikbayan boxes as they could burst from their containers when it is placed under a heavier cargo.

However, Acupan said that this is the third time he has sent liquid items to the Philippines and urged the forwarding company to be careful in handling their packages.

“Pinagpaguran namin ang pera na ‘yan, dapat nagkaroon sila ng care sa mga customer nila na nagpapadala sa kanila,” he said.
