PNP sends cops to Marawi over yantok assault

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is sending two Mandaluyong City policemen to Marawi City as sanction for beating two lawbreakers with a nightstick or yantok.

Mandaluyong police chief Senior Supt. Joaquin Alva said PO1 Jose Julius Tandog and his buddy PO1 Chito Enriquez will be reassigned to Marawi City, reports the Inquirer.

The sanction follows the complaint by two men whom Tandog and Enriquez arrested for drinking liquor on a sidewalk in Sitio Tres, Barangay San Jose on Wednesday afternoon.

Mac Glen Villanueva and Marvin Calda reportedly cursed at the cops and insulted them prompting Tandog to bring them to the barangay hall, where he struck them with the yantok of a village watchman.

One of the arrested men was able to video the beating with his mobile phone and later showed it to a TV news network, which reported it. The video went viral and reached the attention of PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa.

Dela Rosa was enraged after seeing the video, where Tandog struck the men 17 times. Enriquez did not hit the two men, but was nonetheless sanctioned for not stopping Tandog from beating them.

Two Barangay San Jose watchmen—Renato Alvarez and Noel Caldito–defended Tandog and Enriquez but it did not change the decision of the PNP to reassign the two cops to Marawi.
