More than 20,000 police officers have been deployed across Metro Manila as authorities tightened security ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address on Monday.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said security preparations have been finalized and authorities are ready to respond to any contingency during the President’s annual address.
“We have 20,000 police now deployed, and we are ready for any contingencies,” Remulla said in an interview.
He said government agencies continue to hold command conferences and coordination meetings to ensure security and operational plans are synchronized before the event.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government said the heightened security measures aim to maintain peace and order and ensure public safety as various groups are expected to stage demonstrations in Metro Manila during the SONA.
The National Capital Region Police Office earlier placed all police units on full alert ahead of the President’s address.
Security has also been intensified in traditional rally sites and key government locations, including the Batasang Pambansa Complex, the People Power Monument in Quezon City, Malacañang, Liwasang Bonifacio, the Senate in Pasay City and the United States Embassy.
President Marcos is scheduled to deliver his fifth State of the Nation Address before a joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa on Monday afternoon.
