Abu Dhabi equips emergency vehicles with smart cameras to speed up response times

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority has fitted firefighting, ambulance and rescue vehicles with smart cameras in a move aimed at improving emergency response operations, easing access to incident sites and boosting road safety across the emirate.

According to the authority, the smart camera system helps reduce response times by monitoring traffic congestion and detecting obstacles on the road, while also assisting emergency teams in identifying alternative routes in coordination with relevant agencies.

The technology is directly connected to advanced operations room systems, enabling real-time tracking of emergency vehicle movements, faster decision-making and the opening of emergency lanes when necessary.

Authorities said the cameras can also detect and document violations committed by motorists who obstruct emergency vehicles, with footage transmitted directly to the operations center.

The recordings are expected to support field deployment strategies, improve humanitarian response efficiency and strengthen overall traffic safety.

The authority reiterated that failing to give way to emergency vehicles is considered a serious traffic offence in Abu Dhabi, punishable by a Dh3,000 fine, 30 days of vehicle impoundment and six black points.

Motorists were also reminded that they may carefully move aside without fully crossing a red traffic signal if needed to clear the way for emergency vehicles, provided public safety is not compromised.

The initiative forms part of the “Don’t Hesitate… Give Way Immediately” campaign launched in partnership with Abu Dhabi Police, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and the Integrated Transport Centre.

Officials said the campaign aims to encourage drivers to respond immediately to emergency vehicles, promote responsible road behavior and reinforce public awareness that every second can help save lives.
