Sharjah Police warn motorists: leaving accident scenes punishable by fines, penalties

Sharjah Police has warned motorists that leaving the scene of a traffic accident, even a minor one, is a punishable offense that carries financial and legal consequences.

In a new awareness campaign, authorities stressed that all road incidents, regardless of severity, must be reported. Police clarified that failing to stop after minor collisions, such as scratches or low-speed impacts, is considered a hit-and-run violation.

The warning aims to address a common misconception among drivers who believe that minor accidents in parking areas or residential neighborhoods do not require reporting.

Under traffic regulations, motorists who leave the scene of a minor accident face a fine of Dh500 and eight black points on their record. Vehicles may also be impounded for seven days, with release fees reaching up to Dh5,000. Authorities added that repeated violations could result in license suspension.

As part of the campaign, Sharjah Police released an awareness video demonstrating how minor accidents can occur in tight spaces like parking lots and narrow streets, and how leaving the scene can escalate the situation into a legal case.

Motorists are urged to remain at the scene, check on those involved, and report the incident through official channels, including the police app or by calling 901 for non-emergency cases.

Police emphasized that promptly reporting accidents helps ensure proper resolution and prevents heavier penalties.
