10 survival tips for working young professionals abroad

Gem Panganiban, Registered guidance counselor shared some useful tips to survive peacefully life and work abroad.

Be vigilant- Do research about the culture of the country you’ll work in. Know the ethics, regulations, laws, and ordinances implemented. Guard yourself with enough knowledge and awareness.

Know your limits- learn to say no. Learn to explain things not clear to you. This means that you can disagree with some work if you cannot make it, or say if there’s something you can’t do or understand. Know your limitations. You’re not a superhero. Respect begets respect.

Save- when you received your salary, save first before spending. Learn the value of money you’re earning abroad. Don’t buy things that are not necessary. Save so in times of need, you have.

Self-care- no one will take care of you when you live and work abroad. When you got sick, when you’re tired enough, or when you need someone to lean on. So don’t forget to do self-caring. Keep yourself healthy and beautiful/handsome inside and outside.

Manage your time wisely- everything abroad is fast-paced. Learn how to budget your time and use everything wisely. Know how to prioritize things, and learn to use the time in accordance with your plan and with your goals.

Choose your friends- cliché as it is, but still “no man is an island.” Learn to meet people, gain more, and new friends. These are people who will help you in times of need.

Set your goals- how do you see yourself after a year? Two? Three? Five years? If you believe you can meet your goals, plan ahead and aim it. Know the reasons why you’re working abroad. Design your targets and know if these are attainable, and measurable within the given period of time.

Be contented- living and working abroad is truly difficult. Gradually, you’ll learn all the facets of being an overseas worker. You will also know more about yourself: your strengths, and weaknesses, the opportunities, and the threats. Learn to value all things and be contented at first. You’ll know how to deal with everything sooner or later.

Be assertive- adjustments are part of life. Everything that is new to you, you’ll learn to adapt little by little. Be confident enough to face problems, dilemmas, pressures, stress, but be courageous (but with manners and professionalism attitude) enough to handle people. Remember, respect is earned not imposed.

Keep your faith in God- above all, say it everything to God. Talk to Him at all times. He can change everything. He is there, to make miracles happen.
