Former president and current Pampanga representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Gloria caused a rather dramatic beginning to this years State of the Nation Address by replacing Pantaleon Alvarez as house speaker minutes before President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his speech.

The replacement made history as Macapagal-Arroyo becomes the first female House speaker, after reportedly securing more than 200 votes from the members of the lower chamber.

Macapagal-Arroyo’s oath-taking took place as Alvarez welcomed Duterte as per SONA protocol, the House speaker and the Senate president must be the ones to welcome the president.

She took her oath before Ang Kabuhayan party-list Representative Dennis Laogan, the youngest member of the House. However, GMA News reported that none of the proceedings was heard as the audio system in the venue had been turned off.

Due to technical difficulties, Arroyo addressed the lawmakers while shouting and cupping her mouth with her hands.

Photos of the former president quickly spread online and Filipino netizens decided to poke some fun to it by turning the photos into memes.
