Open letter: A daughter’s message to her nanay

When parents leave home to try their luck overseas, the common notion is that the burden is only on the shoulders of OFWs. We often think they are the only ones who battle loneliness. The truth is, the families they leave behind in the Philippines share the same longing, the same amount of loneliness for their relatives miles away from home. This letter, written by a daughter for her mom, reflects the aforementioned sentiments.

Hi, The Filipino Times!

Nabasa ko po yung letter ng isang nanay na OFW para sa anak niya na ga-graduate na magna cum laude ngayong school year. Gusto ko lang po i-share na sobrang naka-relate lang po ako kaya gusto ko din pong magsulat para sa nanay ko na nagtatrabaho din abroad.

Isa pong domestic helper ang nanay ko at mahigit ten years na po siyang nagtatrabaho doon. Sa ten years po na ‘yun, twice pa lang po siya nakakauwi. Bilang anak po ng isang OFW, aaminin ko po na mahirap kasi may mga araw na yung kalinga talaga ni Nanay yung kailangan ko at ng mga kapatid ko. Kahit po kayanin ko at ng pinsan po ni Nanay na alagaan ang mga kapatid ko, minsan nakaka-inggit pa din na makikita mo yung ibang classmate mo na may kasama sila sa graduation tapos ikaw wala.

Kung mahirap po ito para sa akin na panganay, mas mahirap po para sa mga nakababata kong kapatid. Pero alam ko din na sa aming lahat, si Nanay ang pinakanahihirapan.

Bukod sa malayo siya sa amin, naiisip ko din na hirap na hirap na din siguro si Nanay maging domestic helper sa ibang bansa. Sa halip na kami yung inaasikaso niya, mahirap din para sa kanya na anak ng iba ang inuuna niya. Alam ko din na may mga gabing umiiyak mag-isa si Nanay.

Pero proud po akong sabihin na dun sa mga gabing umiiyak si Nanay at nalulungkot siya nang mag-isa, napagtapos niya po ako ng college two years ago. Ngayon nga po ay nagtatrabaho na ako as admin staff ng isang company.

Tumutulong na din po ako sa mga gastusin sa bahay. Pero kahit po medyo may katulong na si Nanay sa gastusin and pag-aaral nila bunsoy, sabi ni nanay, matatagalan pa daw siya bago makauwi. Konting tiis pa daw..

Miss na po kita Nanay and love na love po namin kayo. Syempre po gusto naming makauwi na kayo ng Pinas pero naiintindihan din po namin kung bakit nag-decide kayong mag-stay pa diyan.

Gusto ko lang din pong sabihin na sobrang hanga po ako sa mga nanay na nakikipagsapalaran sa ibang bansa. Sobrang laki po ng mga sakripisyo ninyo para sa aming mga anak niyo.

Sana po mabasa po ito ni Nanay, at pati na din po ang ibang mga OFW na nanay na pilit itinataguyod ang kanilang pamilya.
