Higher standards to be imposed on minivans starting Aug. 15

In an effort to improve passenger safety and develop transportation services, the Abu Dhabi’s Transport Department through the Abu Dhabi Police has released new standards for licensing 15-passenger vehicles and pick-up vehicles.

The rules will be implemented starting August 5, announced the Abu Dhabi Police. The vehicles will be inspected according to technical specifications and requirements for traffic safety set by the Department of Transport.

The Gulf Cooperation Council’s specifications will permit nine-year old vehicles one last year of registration. The specifications include Electronic Braking System (EBS), 300 millimeter space for driver’s feet, no additional seats fitted inside the vehicle, no folding seats in aisles, and special seat belts according to the seat type.

The vehicle models were reviewed by the ministry of interior and Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology.

Vehicles which will not pass the inspection need to be adjusted or decommissioned if they can not improve for the traffic safety standards.
