A toe-curling video showing a tricycle driver’s hairline crawling with an army of head lice has no doubt been causing Filipino netizens to reach for a comb.
The footage posted by Facebook user Primo Onipa shared that his intention was only to spread awareness about head lice infestation that can be dangerous if left untreated.
He also reminded other drivers to be mindful of their hygiene because they interact with a lot of commuters every day.
In a video included in Onipa’s post, head lice can be seen piling up on the nape of his neck and shirt.
Dr. Jay Recasata of Faces and Curves told The Filipino Times that the man’s case can be considered an extreme case. He said it can make him incredibly uncomfortable and feel itchy all over.
“Head lice infestation is contagious. It thrives in the roots of our hair, proliferates fast and sucks out blood in the head. When this happens, it may produce wounds on the scalp and can eventually lead to a bacterial infection.”
Dr. Recasata added that it can easily be treated using a special shampoo which only costs around P500 per bottle.
Meanwhile, Dr. Enrique Collantes of Derma Clinic said that in extreme cases, head lice infestation can cause anemia and malnutrition.
What Causes Head Lice?
Head lice are contagious, according to the health website HealthLine. Anyone can become infected with head lice when the insects crawl onto the head.
Ways you might get head lice include:
• Touching your head to an infected person’s head
• Sharing the personal items (e.g., comb) of someone with head lice
• Using a fabric item after an infected person
• Lice can be transferred by brushes, combs, barrettes, headbands, headphones, and hats. They can also live for a time on upholstered furniture, bedding, towels, or clothing.
Ways to avoid head lice infestation
• Wash clothes and bedding in hot water (130 degrees Fahrenheit or above) and dry on high heat in the dryer
• Dry-clean clothes and bedding
• seal clothes, bedding, and plush toys in a plastic bag for two weeks
• Soak hair brushes, combs, barrettes, and other hair accessories in hot water (130 degrees Fahrenheit) for five to 10 minutes
• Vacuum floors and upholstered furniture
