Ryan Cayabyab overwhelmed by viral ‘Da Coconut Nut’ video of Emirates airlines

World-renowned Filipino composer and musician Ryan Cayabyab can’t help but feel honored after a US student choir entertained passengers on board an Emirates Airline flight with their rendition of his song ‘Da Coconut Nut’.

“You wake up one day and a song you wrote nearly 30 years ago has 10 million+ views on the Internet in three days. Whut?!” Cayabyab said in a Facebook post on Monday.

In the viral video posted by Dubai-based airline Emirates, seventy-five members of the Baylor University School of Music Men’s Choir performed the famous novelty song, amusing plane passengers and the crew alike.

Entertained with the impromptu gig, people on board the plane started dancing along to the choir’s performance.

“It was a spontaneous performance for the crew,” an Emirates’ representative was

quoted to have said.

The composer, Cayabyab, explained why local and international choirs go nuts over the song, “In June of 2008, an American conductor and arranger based in Japan, Randy Stenson, got in touch with me and convinced Barbara Harlow, the president of Santa Barbara Music Publishing of California (SBMPC), to contact me and have the sheet music of the arrangement published.”

The Texas-based choir has been singing the song since 2010 and was in Kenya for a mission trip.

The airline’s video post has over 10 million views, and still counting.
