His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, received a phone call from US President Donald Trump Wednesday to discuss joint efforts to counter extremism.
According to a White House statement, Trump stressed the importance of unity among the Gulf region during the phone talks.
“[Trump] emphasized the importance of maintaining a united Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to promote regional stability, but never at the expense of eliminating funding for radical extremism or defeating terrorism,” the White House said.
The two leaders met last month for a meeting with Saudi leaders, GCC officials and heads of state from predominantly Muslim countries allied with Riyadh.
Trump also talked to Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to help resolve the diplomatic crisis.
“The President offered to help the parties resolve their differences, including through a meeting at the White House if necessary,” the White House said.
