An Asian national who was upset with his former fiancée for marrying another man stands trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he posted private photos of the woman and her sister on social media.
The 31-year-old accused whose name and national was withheld by authorities allegedly used fake accounts on various social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram to defame the sisters.
The case was filed at Al Barsha police station and dates back last January, but the hearing is ongoing, according to local reports.
The defendant told the court that love turned sour between them when the woman suddenly called off their wedding. Months later, he was shattered when he found out that she had married someone else and got pregnant.
In his mind, his ex-fiancée only used him for money. He claimed that he had splurged more than Dh1 million on her, including some jewelry worth Dh90,000 and a new car worth Dh65,000, according to Gulf Today report.
The woman denied these accusations saying that in the span of seven years that they had been engaged, the man would always evade financial obligation for their wedding. Hence, their wedding had been postponed on several occasions.
When she decided to call it quits and move on, the man began to blackmail her by setting up fake social media accounts where he posted some private photos of her, in a bid to expose their past to her husband.
She said he also circulated her cell phone number to unknown men, making her appear as a prostitute, said in a separate report of Khaleej Times.
The police seized his devices and found more than 5,000 private photos of the woman.
The court decision on the case will be handed down on July 21.
