The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stressed their warning that it’s not yet safe to return within the 14-kilometer danger zone as imminent hazardous eruption Taal volcano looms.
Despite the seemingly weakened activity of Taal volcano, Philvocs said that the continuous volcanic quakes and emission of sulfur dioxide emissions indicate the upward movements of magma beneath the volcano’s crater.
“We continue to record earthquakes and a high sulfur dioxide emission, the volcano is inflated, and there is still magma moving upward the volcano. There is a seeming weakening of activity but it doesn’t mean that the danger is over,” Phivolcs’ Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division head Mariton Bornas said in a press briefing.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum explained that eruption may occur not only in the Main crater but in any of the 47 craters of Taal volcano island.
“The people should know that although the present eruption occurred in the Main Crater, explosions could happen anywhere in the island,” Solidum underlined.
Phivolcs reiterated their call for total evacuation despite the weakened volcanic activity as Alert Level 4 or imminent hazardous eruption is possible within hours or days.
