37 persons still unaccounted in NCCC mall fire

Authorities released the names of 37 persons believed to have been trapped in the fire that gutted the NCCC Mall in Davao City on Dec. 23.

No less than President Rodrigo Duterte declared a “zero chance of survival” during a meeting with the families of the still missing persons, most of whom are employees of Business Processing Outsourcing company SSI Philippines that holds office at the fourth floor of the said mall.

Duterte told the families to face the inevitability that there could be no survivors in the fire that gutted the entire mall starting nine in the morning of December 23 and until the morning of December 24.

Even if the trapped call center agents, experts say, were able to keep themselves away from the fire, the heavy smoke could still have killed them in minutes.

Duterte has asked families to pray for the 37 call center agents of Survey Sampling International (SSI) who are still unaccounted 15 hours after the fire broke out.

He visited the fire site and met with the families of the victims at the designated holding room in Aposento Restaurant along McArthur Highway on late Saturday night.

He was with Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte.

The rescuers called off rescue operations four hours after the fire broke out as it was already dangerous to go inside the mall with the black fumes and fire engulfing the building.

The fire broke out past 9 a.m. Saturday at the third floor of the New City Commercial Center more known to Dabawenyos as NCCC Mall. The SSI Call Center was located at the fourth floor.

The fire incident occurred while Davao City is still reeling from the damage brought by the onslaught of typhoon “Vinta.”
