Two gangs nabbed by UAE authorities over text scam

Two gangs made up of Asian members were arrested by the Dubai Police for perpetrating text scams.

A total of 43 Asians from two gangs operating in Dubai and Ajman, duped their victims by claiming to work for telecommunications companies in the UAE and promising them cash prizes, as reported by Khaleej Times.

After their victims fell prey to their fake text offers, the gangs would then ask them to transfer money to be able to claim their prizes.

Dubai Police began to grow suspicious about the illegal activity when they noticed that many Asians were visiting a flat in Deira.

According to Brigadier Saeed Hamad Bin Sulaiman, director of the Rashidiya police station, the crimes team raided the apartment and proved that the scam was executed in the flat.

Authorities nabbed 14 people and seized 90 phones and 70 SIM cards used for the text messaging scam.

In a separate raid, police got a tip that another gang was operating a scam in Ajman and arrested 19 suspects there.

“When the police analyzed the data on the gang members’ phones, it emerged that they had used different templates to send out the bogus text messages,” Colonel Omar bin Hammad, director of the anti-economic crimes department, said.

He also reminded the public to be wary about dubious text offers and report suspicious activities to police through hotline 901.
