10.5 million Filipinos face joblessness

Many risk leaving the Philippines in search of better job opportunities overseas. Still, unemployed Filipinos who chose to stay in the country remain optimistic of landing a job in the upcoming months.

According to the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released on Monday, 22.2 percent or an estimated 10.5 million Filipino adults nationwide remain jobless in the second quarter of 2017, higher than the 10.4 million jobless adults recorded last March.

The survey, conducted from June 23 to 26, showed that jobless Filipinos are comprised of around 1.8 million first-time job-seekers, 5.7 million who voluntarily left their jobs, and 2.9 million who lost their jobs “due to economic circumstances beyond their control”.

Despite the growing number of unemployed Filipinos, people’s optimism of getting a job within the next 12 months remain “very high”, the survey said.

The number of Filipinos who are optimistic on job availability increased two points at 46 percent from March’s 44 percent.

SWS interviewed 1,200 adults nationwide for the survey (300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao).
