London tower fire claims 6 lives

Six people are confirmed dead and more than 50 were injured in a massive fire that engulfed a residential tower in west London early Wednesday.

“I can confirm six fatalities at this time, but this figure is likely to rise during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days. Many others are receiving medical care,” The Guardian quoted Commander Stuart Cundy of the Metropolitan Police as saying.

Paul Woodrow, director of operations at London Ambulance Service, said the number of people injured in the fire that broke out at the 24-story Grenfell Tower increased to 64 with 20 of them in critical condition.

“We have been treating patients for a range of inquiries, as well as for smoke inhalation,” Woodrow said.

Witnesses said the blaze started on one side of the tower block before engulfing the building in flames from the second to the top floor.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan declared the unprecedented event as “a major incident”.
