Light vehicles accounted for the largest share of road accidents in the United Arab Emirates last year, according to new data released by the UAE Ministry of Interior.
Figures showed light vehicles were involved in 3,834 accidents, far surpassing other categories. Motorcycles followed with 1,224 incidents, while heavy trucks were linked to 325 cases.
Other vehicle types recorded smaller but notable numbers: bicycles were involved in 158 accidents, heavy buses in 131, and electric scooters in 120.
Light buses accounted for 115 incidents, while e-bikes were linked to 62. Vehicles of unknown type figured in 31 cases, while heavy and light mechanical equipment were involved in 13 and one incident, respectively.
In total, 6,014 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide. Of these, 4,085 were vehicle collisions, 1,102 involved pedestrians being hit, and 800 were rollovers. Another 27 cases fell under other categories.
Data also pointed to the leading causes of accidents. Sudden swerving topped the list with 1,074 cases, followed by driver distraction at 948. Failure to maintain a safe distance contributed to 849 accidents, while negligence and lack of attention were cited in 661 incidents.
The Interior Ministry identified around 160 contributing factors to road crashes, including failure to yield to pedestrians, unsafe overtaking, running red lights, over speeding relative to road conditions, and tire blowouts.
