Dubai Police arrest drug trafficking gang victimizing young people through ‘WhatsApp’

Overseas Filipino workers, who have their kids with them in the UAE, be warned: Dubai Police have uncovered a gang of Arab men allegedly peddling drugs to young ones through WhatsApp.

Dubai Police have arrested members of the gang, according to a post on the law enforcement agency’s Facebook page with Maj. Gen. Expert Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Assistant Commander for the Criminal Investigation Affairs saying the group uses social meda to promote drugs.

“The gang used social media platforms to promote drugs. Upon receiving the payments, they transferred it from one member’s bank account to another until it finally reaches the mastermind’s who currently resides at one of the Arab countries,” said Maj. Gen. Al Mansoori.

The police said that they have received a tip from an anonymous person and later on told them that the group is promoting drugs via ‘WhatsApp’.

“After identifying the suspect, the team tracked his movements and arrested him at his residing apartment where some of the narcotic substances were found.” Brigadier Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics, meantime said.

The gang reportedly included a bank employee who has allowed suspicious transfers from the bank management.

Total amount of hidden transfers has reached to Dh12 million, according to Brig. Hareb.

The gang is composed of four men who were working in different fields. The mastermind however works outside the Emirates, officials said.

The suspected members were arrested in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They will now undergo legal procedures.
