Ras Al Khaimah launches plan to make all taxis eco-friendly by 2024

Transport officials in Ras Al Khaimah have launched a five-year plan to make its taxi-fleet, composed of 850 units, eco-friendly.

The taxis will be running on electric power, according to a report on the Khaleej Times.

Ismail Hassan Al Balooshi, director-general of the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA), told Khaleej Times the plan will cover their 2020-2025 strategy.

“We have started with two electric cabs, in collaboration with the Hamra Taxi and Arabia Taxi. All our taxi fleet will go green by 2024. The fleet is now 60 per cent hybrid. The authority is committed to its strategic mission – safety, environment sustainability and support of green economy,” the official said.

Transport authorities added that companies should now turn to green taxis to reduce carbon emissions.

“We are working with cab franchise companies to turn taxis green. The electric cabs will help reduce carbon emissions and also cut operational costs. It is a major part of our plans to improve the emirate’s air quality,” the official added.

In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) wants 90 percent of vehicles to be hybrid or electric by 2026.
