A 17-year-old Emirati drowned off Fujairah while swimming in calm seas on Sunday evening despite attempts by his elder bother to rescue him.
The boy was swimming with his brothers when he suddenly screamed for help, prompting his elder brother to rush and try to pull him out.
“His brother tried many times to pull him out but failed. Police divers arrived and plucked him out but he was already dead,” Emarat Al Youm daily said.
The paper quoted witnesses as saying that the boy started to scream after drowning although there were no strong winds and the water was calm.
Police said they have opened an investigation into the incident.
