Filipinos and expats are advised to steer clear of eating food, chewing gum, smoking/vaping and even drinking water at public places during the holy month of Ramadan as not only may this act be deemed offensive for Muslim brothers and sisters who are currently fasting, those who do so run the risk of getting fined of up to Dh 2000.
Article 313 of the UAE’s Penal Code clearly states:
“Shall be sentenced to detention for a term not exceeding one month or to a fine not excess of two thousand dirham, whoever:
“In a public place consumes food or drinks or any other thing that breaks fast during Ramadan period”
Those who are not fasting are advised to go to places away from public view if they need to eat or drink. At your place of work, you may ask your HR manager or security personnel to guide you towards the pantry and/or a designated area to eat or drink.
Several restaurants and/or dining establishments may also be open during the day time with closed curtains.
The safest place to eat or drink should be the confines of your own home.
