The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has warned motorists to avoid taking a selfie when driving as offenders will be fined with Dh800 and four black points.
“A driver taking a selfie or a photo for approximately two seconds is like driving the length for nearly half a football field. Remember, using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is a traffic violation punishable by Dh800 and four black points,” said the RTA in a report from Gulf News.
The authority has also asserted that using a phone while driving makes driving slower by 50 percent compared to undistracted driving, making motorists prone to vehicular accidents.
Road safety experts warned that using a mobile phone to call or text while driving can delay a driver’s response which can led to the possibility of an accident by 280 percent.
RTA’s warning is part of its efforts to spread a safe driving culture amid the unstable weather in UAE, which may tempt drivers to take photos of the rain.
