Maltreated OFW rescued by friends in Kuwait

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Kuwait was saved by her friends after being locked up by her employer in a house for two days.

A video shared to GMA News by Honie Grace Cortez dela Cerna on Tuesday, October 24, showed dela Cerna and another OFW named Regina Valdez extending help to the victim named Arna Ayunan.

OFWs dela Cerna and Cortez risked their own jobs and safety when they lowered down a plastic bag containing a cellphone, portable wi-fi, and food from the rooftop of a building to Ayunan who was waiting in the employer’s house where she was locked up.

Ayunan was maltreated by her employer according to her two friends. She was not compensated for the last four months and was barred from going home to the Philippines after her husband died on April.

Her employer allowed her to go home hours after the video was taken on October 15. However, she only received only a month’s worth of her salary.

The rescued OFW is now in Maguindanao, Philippines.

The incident reached Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), who said the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Kuwait has seeked for help on the concerned foreign recruitment agency to get an incident report.

There are approximately 225,000 Filipinos in Kuwait, according to data from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
